Monday Moves: Super On-Site Stretch Series Week Three: Side Bending & New Photos!

Posted By Ariel Hill-Davis, Monday, April 4, 2016

MineFit has developed a basic set of seven stretching moves for employees to use on-site. Monica Pampell, our MineFit Head Coach, visited a mine site today to teach this stretch and many others, to the workforce. All of the selected stretches and exercises are effective and easy to do before and after shifts, as well as on lift equipment

Stay tuned for more stretches and exercises as part of the broad MineFit initiative for this year, now including photos which are highly relatable to workers.

Next in this series is the Side Bend.

This helps open the sides of the back, where the longest muscle in the body is attached at the armpit and the hip. It reduces shoulder and hip problems by creating length in the middle of the body, ensuring shoulders aren't pulled forward and hips are better able to extend and flex.

Perform 10 to each side, and take a deep breath every time you reach your hand to the floor, lengthening from neck to ankle and making the body into the shape of a C.

Keeping the Balance (or not!) to Avoid Injury

Posted By Darrell Smith, Friday, March 11, 2016

In a recent meta-analysis review of 17 trials involving a total of 4,305 participants aged 50 and older, researchers concluded that regularly engaging in balance exercises not only prevented falls, but actually prevented injury (including fractures) when falls did occur. Even in the case of severe falls, injuries were less common among those who exercised regularly and performed balance techniques. It makes sense when you consider what moving and walking is…we are always on one foot! Challenge yourself with 30 seconds on each leg with your eyes open, and 7 seconds on each leg with your eyes closed.

New Year, New Webinars

Posted By Ariel Hill-Davis, Wednesday, January 20, 2016

IMA-NA is kicking off our 2016 Webinar Program with two webinars focused on very different aspects of the mining industry.  On January 29th we welcome back Monica Pampell, President of PentaFit LLC and head coach for IMA-NA's new MineFit Program, to present Straight, Strong Backs: Using Posture to Prevent the "Big Three Back" Injuries and Improve Spinal Health.   Our second webinar will take place on February 11th and we will hear from Hilton Wood with Volvo Construction Equipment about the growing role of telematics in the world of heavy construction equipment.  Below are complete descriptions of both webinars along with links to register.

Straight, Strong Backs: Using Posture to Prevent the "Big Three Back" Injuries and Improve Spinal Health

Fri, Jan 29, 2016 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EST

The mining industry is plagued by back injuries. And the rates of injury, in conjunction with reports of recurrent pain amongst workers and employees, indicates that simply focusing on proper lifting techniques (which has been oversold as a true solution) do not attack the core cause of these pervasive injuries. In this webinar, MineFit's head coach, Monica Pampell, will discuss the "Big Three Back" injuries and how they can be eliminated by teaching miners to focus their attention on proper posture and back fitness. By utilizing just a few important techniques and intervention strategies, the "Big 3 Back" focus can serve as the bedrock for a broad reduction in rates of injury.

Heavy Construction Equipment Telematics: Past, Present, and Future

Thu, Feb 11, 2016 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EST

Telematics, in a broad sense, is the integrated use of telecommunications with information and communications technology. It is the technology that sends, receives, and stores information relating to remote assets, such as vehicles, via telecommunication devices. In this live webinar presentation, Hilton Wood, Senior Telematics Specialist with Volvo Construction Equipment, will speak to the past, present, and future of Heavy Construction Equipment telematics.
