Sage Grouse Update

Posted By Chris Greissing, Monday, August 7, 2017

As we mentioned on the IMA-NA First Friday call last week, it appeared as if the Department of Interior was finalizing the review of the Obama Administration’s greater sage grouse conservation plans.

Earlier today, Department of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke released the report.  The suggestions contained in the report show that the current administration is planning on quickly implementing these suggestions to dramatically change the Obama Administration’s plans.

The report suggests that the Department of Interior will be moving away from the restrictive and costly restrictions previously requested by the Obama administration.  Secretary Zinke is encouraging the implementation of nine broad recommendations, including: reevaluating habitat protections; allowing states to set population objectives; providing more flexibility in management decisions; clarifying standards for waivers to habitat protections; and changing the policy on oil leasing in affected areas.

A reminder- we provide legislative, regulatory and general updates to membership on our First Friday phone calls.  Please join us on September 1st at 1PM ET for the next call.  And as always, don’t hesitate to contact IMA-NA staff if you have any questions.

Registration is also now open for our Annual meeting where we will discuss this issue among many others.  Registration information is available, here.
