Soda Ash Legislation Passes House Committee

Posted By Chris Greissing, Wednesday, June 28, 2017

The House Natural Resources Committee held a markup of H.R. 1399, the American Soda Ash Competitiveness Act.  The legislation is designed to allow the industry to be more competitive in the global marketplace where they are facing very stiff competition from a heavily subsidized Chinese industry.  In order to allow the industry to be more competitive, the legislation would lower the federal royalty rate the industry currently pays for the minerals mined on federal lands from 6% to 2% for a period of 5 years.  H.R. 1399 and its companion bill in the Senate S. 546 both have wide bipartisan support.  The Committee approved the legislation by a bipartisan vote of 27-9.

IMA-NA would like to thank Congressman Paul Cook and Congressman Liz Cheney for their leadership and support on this important bill for the U.S. natural soda ash industry.

IMA-NA provided comments for the markup which are attached.
