The Industrial Minerals Association – North America (IMA-NA) earned a 2016 American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Power of A Silver Award for its MineFit wellness initiative: a program designed to empower employees with the knowledge and confidence they need to be safer and healthier, both on and off the work site. The MineFit mission and practice is to make a tangible difference in the lives of workers in the industrial minerals industry by incorporating principles of athleticism, human ergonomics, nutrition, and preventive health into the workplace. The program also places special emphasis on recognizing that mineworkers need their bodies and minds to be more finely tuned than those in many other types of job settings.
Accepting the award on behalf of IMA-NA are Ms. Monica Pampell, President, Pentafit, LLC, and Darrell K. Smith, Ph.D., Executive Vice President, IMA-NA.
“Congratulations to IMA-NA and its partners for their hard work and for helping to make the world a better place,” said Sharon J. Swan, FASAE, CAE, Chief Executive Officer of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and chair of the Power of A Awards Judging Committee. “Their initiative exemplifies how associations are a positive force in our everyday lives – not just to the profession or industry they represent, but to society at large.”
The MineFit program acknowledges the physical demands placed on miners every day, and their often-challenging workplace setting. MineFit quarterly initiatives examine worker needs and preferences and empower employees with knowledge from the field of athletics to create a more healthful work environment. By teaching mineworkers simple rules of thumb, such as how to engage the proper muscles, MineFit helps miners avoid injury and strengthen their bodies. Some of the inspiration for the program stemmed from the very elements a coach and staff would keep in mind when leading a team. Players’ needs are always given priority. Miners should be given the same treatment, consideration, and tools to keep them healthy and functioning at work.
“I am thrilled that the MineFit program has been honored with this award and that we are already seeing results within the industrial minerals workforce. Health and wellness are linked to safety and performance, and I am thankful to the leaders and employees in the industry for their foresight and support. If more American industries embrace the concepts we have applied within the IMA-NA membership, real change will be achieved, creating a lasting culture change within innumerable organizations and industries. ” stated Miss Pampell.
